The findings of the study are published within the Journal of the American College of Nutrition. The findings suggest that participants lost a mean of 6 kilograms on the vegan diet, compared with no meaningful change on the Mediterranean diet.

Previous studies have suggested that both Mediterranean and vegan diets improve weight and cardiometabolic risk factors. Researchers said that a low-fat vegan diet has better outcomes for weight, body composition, insulin sensitivity, and cholesterol levels, compared with a Mediterranean diet.

Major differences between Vegan and Mediterranean diet:

While both diets are healthy, the subsequent differences make them different from one another.

  • A vegan diet comprises only plant-based foods. It doesn’t include any animal-based foods like milk, dairy, etc. While the Mediterranean diet includes both vegetarian and non-veg sources of food. It works on the principle of foods eaten in and around the Mediterranean region.
  • Since a vegan diet doesn’t comprise any non-veg food, it’s known to be a far better option to control cholesterol.
  • The Mediterranean diet also consists of varied foods that improve health. These include fatty fish, olive oil, among others.
  • The preferred foods within the vegan diet include plant-based milk, fruits, and vegetables. While the most popular foods within the Mediterranean diet include fatty fish, olive oil, and fruits and vegetables.
